"Spring Festival Mission" of a Village Women's Director

At 1:28 a.m. on February 26th, 2020, Mi Xiuquan put the vehicle register and her thermos cup into the handbag. After handing over the work with the staff stationed at the entrance of the town, she walked home with her cell phone's flashlight illuminating the road. The patrol car behind her was quietly flashing lights, guarding the entrance to all parts of the town.

This is the 11th day in a row that Mi Xiuquan assisted in the night patrol of a village in Tongnan District of Chongqing. "I'm the Women's Director of the village. Actually, there isn't much work in our office now. The patrol station is near my home and it’s only 10 minutes for me to go back and forth so that I can assist the work of the village committee. It's good to be able to do something for others so as to relieve their pressure." Mi Xiuquan works in the office of the village committee from eight in the morning to six in the afternoon. At present, there are only 6000 permanent residents in the town and more than half of them are home-based elderly.

"During the Spring Festival, people will enjoy the most exciting time," said Mi, "People who work in other cities come home for reunion will bring their children back to visit the elderly and the road of the village is often blocked by traffic. Every household has to set up a banquet and the streets will be crowded with people on the market day." This year's COVID-19 which had swept across China has upset the busy schedule. The market is closed as required, only pharmacies and supermarkets are allowed to open, so business is in a slump.

On January 22th, Mi Xiuquan's daughter, a graduate student in Wuhan, returned home. At that time, Mi was still in the office of the village committee. Without hesitation, she immediately called her husband, "Let our daughter fill in the information, and don't go anywhere. We should wait for further notice." Soon, the director of the town government office asked her daughter to observe home quarantine without contact with her family for 14 days.

"To be honest, I was very flustered at that time. I didn't expect this to happen to me." Mi recalled that at the beginning of the virus outbreak, the number of confirmed cases was increasing all over the country, and her daughter Lili often forwarded help seeking information for those suspected patients. On January 24th, Chongqing launched the first level response to public health emergencies. The masks of three clinics and pharmacies in the town were all out of stock." Everyone was panicking and I couldn't just worry about my own family at such a moment. I should stick to my duty. Fortunately, my daughter didn't have any signs of infection. In order to be responsible for others, I came back to work after I had observed home quarantine and confirmed that I was healthy. "

When Mi Xiuquan returned to work, she had no hesitation in volunteering for different tasks. Together with the staff of other units, Mi post banners, write radio releases, fill in information from door to door, distribute masks and medical alcohol, etc. Due to the Spring Festival, the number of people living at home in the town with a permanent population of 6000 have doubled, which increased the workload during the epidemic period. "We need to check where these people come from, where they have passed, when they come back, and how their health condition is," Mi said with a determined look on her face, “To make sure everything is in order.”

Mi Xiuquan is on the go all day long and her office is just a place to take a short rest. Since February 15th, she and her colleagues have been working together at the entrance of the town to check vehicles and passers-by. "It's much more fun to work with people than to be alone in the office. I'm so busy that my husband cooks for me every day. I feel so happy. " The optimistic middle-aged woman laughed heartily. Like other staff members, she is brave and fearless. They spare no efforts in guarding the safety of local residents.

Postscript

This winter vacation, my family returned to a small village in Tongnan District of Chongqing for the Spring Festival. Because of the epidemic, everyone stayed at home. Sometimes I met aunt Mi Xiuquan, who was passing by my house on her commute. When everyone was at home during this special period, she was busy helping others by sacrificing her own time for our peace of mind. I admire her for her courage and sense of responsibility, so I asked her for this interview opportunity. In fact, in order to ensure that information is conveyed to everyone in the countryside, people in charge like aunt Mi Xiuquan have to send and collect the information step by step. Thank each of them sincerely!
