课程简介：中国文化具有独特的属性和特殊的语言载体，具有不同语言传统和文化心理的外国人对于中国经典容易产生“敬而远之”的心态，这种心态往往成为中国传统文化得以真正理解、落地、接受的严重障碍。上海外国语大学“英语语言文学”是全国重点学科，将培养学生的文化融通和互鉴的能力作为教学的核心目标。本课程以孔子的《论语》和老子的《道德经》为基本素材，在充分遵循“信、达、雅”原则的同时，以阐释学方法，力求准确传达原文的丰富寓意，将《论语》《道德经》的理念、观点与西方先哲的理念、观点进行对比和分析，实现中西文化的有机融合。课程采取英文授课，着力突破西方人理解中国典籍作品时的文化心理障碍，真正实现文化互鉴。这门课程是外国人了解中国文化的重要抓手和突破口，也能够助力培养以输出中国文化为己任的卓越外语人才。

Course Introduction：

Chinese Classics The Analects (497 BC) and Tao Te Ching (4th century BC) are of crucial importance for the understanding of Chinese culture and history, the former of which is widely deemed as a fertile and reliable source of social wisdom in China and the latter is universally acknowledged as a sobering and guiding spirit in human history. The impacts of the two classics on Chinese social and spiritual lives are powerful and profound, which enjoys a high visibility in almost every aspect of Chinese life. It is no exaggeration to say that it is nearly impossible to have an in-depth understanding of traditional and modern China without a sound knowledge of the two classics. However, it is no easy job for modern readers to comprehend them due to a time lapse of over two thousand and five hundred years from the dates when they were created. They pose even a bigger challenge to readers out of China or those who have no or very limited knowledge about Chinese philosophies, social governance and spiritual beliefs. The course is designed to bridge the gap between the classics and modern readers, especially readers with thinking frameworks different from Chinese, through our strenuous effort to relate the texts of the two classics with philosophical, historical and literary works written by renowned figures in other parts of the world, among whom are Plato, Aristotle, Bertrand Russel, Shakespeare, Emerson, Tagore, with an eye to better helping learners approach the classics and understand Chinese culture.

The course is primarily targeted at learners who wish to deepen their knowledge about China, specifically the fundamentals that are beneath Chinese thinking and behaving patterns, who, more often than not, feel baffled or misguided due to differences, major or minute, sharp or subtle, in cultures. The course, therefore, by demonstrating parallels, similarities or affinities among classical texts from different cultures, provides learners with a solid and valuable help for a better understanding of Chinese culture. We wish to fulfill our aim by way of making apparently distant Chinese classics near and dear to the readers highly interested in Chinese culture.

史志康，上海外国语大学英语学院教授、博士生导师，现任中国英国文学学会副会长 。研究领域为中国经典翻译与研究，莎士比亚研究。曾任中国政府申办、主办2010年世博会报告英语稿主撰人及定稿人，曾获得“宝钢教育基金优秀教师奖”“霍英东教育基金优秀青年教师奖”等。

孙艳，上海外国语大学英语学院讲师。研究领域为英美文学、法律与文学跨学科研究、中国法律文化传播研究。获上海市高校青年教师文学示范课邀请赛一等奖、上海市教学创新大赛（新文科组）二等奖、全国微课大赛上海赛区二等奖等。

陈琦，上海外国语大学英语学院比较文学副教授，研究领域为英国文学、中英文学关系、中国古典文化英译研究等。
